House arrest law proposed to ease prison overcrowding

The government is preparing new legislation to allow suspects to be placed under house arrest instead of being remanded in prison, aiming to reduce severe overcrowding in correctional facilities.Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara said prisons designed to hold about 10,500 inmates are currently housing nearly 39,000.Of these, around 28,000 are remand prisoners who have not been convicted, including about 20,000 detained for drug-related offences. The proposed law, drafted under the guidance of Yasantha Kodagoda, would allow courts to impose home detention in suitable cases instead of pre-trial imprisonment, helping to ease congestion. The minister also noted the absence of a formal system to review or reduce sentences for inmates serving life terms or facing the death penalty.A committee chaired by Justice Thurairaja has been appointed to explore the introduction of a sentence reduction framework for long-term prisoners.Sri Lanka’s courts are currently handling about 1.1 million pending cases. The minister said case disposal rates have improved under the current Chief Justice, with seven new courts planned, including special courts for Easter Sunday attack cases and bribery-related offences.Addressing concerns over the recent shooting of a lawyer and his wife in Akuregoda, Nanayakkara stated that the legal community is not under threat due to court appearances and assured that justice will be served. He also confirmed that the Government will amend its proposed rent legislation following public feedback and will not proceed with the bill in its current form.

Aviation fuel pipeline contract set for April

Sri Lanka’s Energy Ministry plans to award the contract for the aviation fuel pipeline from Muthurajawela to Bandaranaike International Airport in April 2026.The project includes building a fuel transfer pipeline and new jet fuel storage tanks to strengthen the country’s aviation fuel supply chain.According to ministry reports, the second round of bidding closed on November 14, 2025, and the evaluation process is now nearing completion. Construction is expected to finish by October 2028.The initiative has been prioritised by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, which plans to reinvest its Rs. 18 billion profit from the first half of 2025 into infrastructure upgrades, including the Muthurajawela–Katunayake pipeline to improve fuel logistics and efficiency.Meanwhile, due to funding challenges following the 2022–2023 financial crisis, the previously planned Cross Country Pipeline Project was suspended.Instead, the Cabinet approved a new pipeline from the Kolonnawa Oil Terminal to Colombo Harbour on November 17, 2025, with procurement documents currently being prepared to fast-track the project.

15 foreigners deported in tourism crackdown

Sri Lanka’s tourism authorities, working with law enforcement agencies, have intensified action against illegal tourism businesses operated by foreigners. The operations led to the arrest of 75 individuals and the deportation of 15 foreign nationals last year.Officials stated that most offenders come from countries that are among Sri Lanka’s main tourism source markets. The joint raids are being carried out by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, the Department of Immigration and Emigration, and the Sri Lanka Police.Authorities are targeting foreigners who engage in unauthorised business activities in the hospitality and travel sector, often violating visa conditions. Legal action is also being taken against local individuals who assist or collaborate in such illegal ventures. To strengthen enforcement, the police are expanding specialised units, with plans to set up or restructure more than 80 tourism police divisions across designated tourism zones. The crackdown forms part of a wider Government effort to formalise the informal tourism sector. A new Tourism Act is currently being drafted to tighten regulations, simplify registration for informal operators, and introduce stricter penalties for those who bypass the legal system.

Le Mans 24 2026 entry list revealed

Le Mans 24 2026 entry list revealed

The 94th edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours will feature a capacity grid of 62 cars, but there will be fewer contenders fighting for the overall win in the Hypercar class.Porsche’s departure from the top division of the World Endurance Championship has contributed to a decline in the number of Hypercar entries to 18 in 2026, down from 21 last year. The German manufacturer had helped propel the top class to a record tally in 2025, fielding three 963s on a factory basis, with privateer Proton Competition entering a fourth example of the Multimatic chassis.Although the Volkswagen Group brand was eligible to participate in Hypercar this year courtesy of its 2025 IMSA GTP title, its exit from the eight-round WEC prevented it from taking up its auto-invite.Another notable absence from this year’s Le Mans is Action Express Racing, which had been racing at La Sarthe every year since the introduction of the LMDh ruleset in 2023.AXR’s surprise exit leaves three Cadillac V-Series.R LMDh cars in Hypercar: the two full-season factory cars entered by Jota, plus an additional entry fielded by Wayne Taylor Racing. WTR, which raced at Le Mans for the first time last year after rejoining Cadillac’s fold, will carry an unchanged driver line-up comprising Filipe Albuquerque, Ricky Taylor and Jordan Taylor. The departures of Porsche and AXR have been partially offset by the arrival of Hyundai’s luxury marque Genesis, which will field a pair of Oreca-based GMR001 LMDh cars in the full WEC.Otherwise, the Hypercar field remains largely stable, with eight manufacturers present on the grid: Aston Martin, Toyota, Cadillac, BMW, Genesis, Ferrari, Alpine and Peugeot.Of those eight brands, Ferrari will head into Le Mans on the back of three consecutive victories, while WEC stalwart Toyota will debut its rebranded TR001 Hybrid after completing a major overhaul of its LMH contender over the winter. Alpine, meanwhile, is set for its final Le Mans appearance for the time being, following its decision to withdraw from the WEC at the end of the season.A larger LMP2 fieldA total of 19 LMP2 cars will contest the secondary prototype division, including 10 in the Pro-Am sub-category. This represents a modest increase over 2025, when the class featured 17 cars.Reigning LMP2 champion Inter Europol will return with a pair of Oreca 07s, both entered under the standard P2 sub-category this time, while the likes of United Autosport and Proton Competition will also field two cars each.Several teams are joining or returning to Le Mans this year, including DKR Engineering, IMSA regular CrowdStrike Racing by APR, Vector Sport, Duqueine Team, CLX Motorsport and RD Limited. On the other hand, RLR M Sport and CLR Pure Rxing are absent from this year’s field. Most LMP2 teams didn’t announce their full driver line-ups, but it has been revealed that new McLaren Hypercar signing Mikkel Jensen will drive the #22 United Autosports Oreca alongside Rasmus Lindh and Gregoire Saucy. Other notable names in the LMP2 class include Doriane Pin (Duqueine), Pietro Fittipaldi (Vector), Tom Dillmann and Nick Yelloly (Inter Europol), Louis Deletraz and Dane Cameron (AO by TF), and Oliver Jarvis (United Autosports).Expanded LMGT3 grid. The LMGT3 has grown to 25 entries with both Aston Martin and Corvette adding an extra car compared to last year, but with Porsche's attack depleted after Iron Dames's decision to pull out of the WEC.The Heart of Racing’s two Aston Martin Vantage GT3s entered for the full WEC season will be supplemented by an additional Vantage, run under the Racing Spirit of Leman banner. The last-named team ran one car under its name in the full WEC last year, but is absent from this year’s grid as THOR takes over both entries.Corvette will also increase its presence, with TF entering a third car under the Racing Team by Turkey moniker and Orey Fidani’s 13 Autosport taking over the entry previously held by AWA.Elsewhere, Kessel Racing will expand to a second Ferrari 296 GT3 Evo, effectively replacing Ziggo Sport Tempesta in the Italian marque’s roster.Further, Garage59 will enter a pair of McLaren 720s GT3 Evos, having taken over the running of the British manufacturer’s LMGT3 programme from United Autosports, which is directing its attention to its 2027 Hypercar programme. In all, nine manufacturers will be represented in the LMGT3 class at Le Mans: Corvette, McLaren, Ferrari, Aston Martin, BMW, Mercedes, Ford, Lexus and Ferrari.Of those, only BMW, Ford and Lexus will stick to their regular two-car WEC entries, while the remaining manufacturers expand their presence for Le Mans.Porsche will head to La Sarthe as the reigning LMGT3 champion, having been unbeaten since the introduction of the class at Le Mans in 2024.There are also nine cars on the reserve list, split between five LMP2s and four LMGT3s.-Autosport

Aprilia wants to sign Pecco

Aprilia wants to sign Pecco

Aprilia CEO Massimo Rivola is pushing hard to convince two-time champion Francesco Bagnaia to join the Noale factory alongside Marco Bezzecchi next season.Ducati is expected to announce Marc Marquez’s contract renewal for the 2027 and 2028 MotoGP seasons in the coming days, a move that would pave the way for the confirmation of Pedro Acosta’s arrival for the same period.Such a reshuffle would leave Marquez’s current team-mate, Bagnaia, without a seat in Ducati’s factory garage next season. With it increasingly clear that his future lies away from Bologna, Bagnaia has begun exploring alternative options. Through his agent, Gianluca Falcioni, the two-time MotoGP champion has been holding discreet talks with potential suitors. One of the first approaches came from Aprilia. Initially, Bagnaia parked that possibility, having spent much of his career with Ducati and appearing more inclined to move to a Japanese manufacturer.Honda has effectively been ruled out, with the Japanese giant set to invest heavily in Fabio Quartararo while also targeting a young rider for its second seat. That left Yamaha as the frontrunner in negotiations, and until recently all signs pointed towards the Iwata factory pairing the two most recent MotoGP champions prior to Marquez’s Ducati resurgence — Jorge Martin and Bagnaia — for 2027 and 2028.During the Sepang test, Bagnaia made it clear he would not consider a satellite ride.“I believe I am a frontrunner rider, so my ambitions must always lead me to stay at the forefront,” he said. “There are many opportunities, and the good work I have done in recent years certainly helps at this moment."In doing so, he effectively ruled out a move to VR46, the team owned by his long-time mentor Valentino Rossi.Aprilia renews its pushWhile Yamaha remains Bagnaia’s priority, Autosport understands that Aprilia has recently returned with an improved proposal, backed by the persuasive efforts of Rivola.Aprilia’s racing budget, under the Piaggio Group, is considerably smaller than Yamaha’s. However, Jorge Martin’s departure to the factory Yamaha squad at the end of the season will free up an estimated €4million in salary.Part of that allocation has already gone towards Marco Bezzecchi’s new contract, but around €3m is believed to be available as a starting point in negotiations with Bagnaia. For Aprilia, assembling what it sees as the two leading Italian riders of the moment – Bezzecchi and Bagnaia – would represent a dream scenario. The fact that the pair are friends and members of the VR46 Rider Academy adds an emotional element to the pitch Rivola is making.Sporting arguments also support Aprilia’s case. At present, the RS-GP is widely regarded as a more competitive package than Yamaha’s new M1 V4, strengthening Noale’s appeal.Another factor that could weigh in negotiations is Yamaha’s apparent preference for Martin before intensifying discussions with Bagnaia – a detail that may not have gone unnoticed by the Italian.“Renewing Marco was our main priority,” Rivola said in early February after confirming Bezzecchi’s extension. “Once that priority was set, we will see how the market evolves.”Asked about the prospect of fielding two Italian riders, the former Ferrari Formula 1 executive was deliberately cautious.“I’m not saying yes or no. There are interesting scenarios,” Rivola said. “But I believe that if Aprilia continues to demonstrate its growth and shows it can build fast bikes, the top riders will come.”Time, however, may be Aprilia’s biggest obstacle. Once Marquez’s Ducati renewal is officially announced, the rider market is expected to move quickly. Yamaha is pushing Bagnaia to finalise an agreement, even as Aprilia attempts to sway him — not only with sporting arguments, but also with sentiment.-Autosport

Rousey to undergo stricter MMA tests

Rousey to undergo stricter MMA tests

Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano will undergo stricter "neurological and concussion" medical tests before they are cleared to return to MMA.The long-retired duo are scheduled to meet in a five-round featherweight bout on 16 May in California.Rousey, 39, has spoken at length about serious concussion problems throughout her athletic career and said it contributed to her decision to retire from MMA 10 years ago."We're going to put her through neurological and concussion battery testing and make sure she's okay," California State Athletic Commission executive director Andy Foster told ESPN., external"We're going to have our doctors take a look."The fighters are going to have to do a lot of medicals, both of them."The California State Athletic Commission requires additional testing for fighters over the age of 40.The commission uses recommendations from the Association of Ringside Physicians to screen older fighters. Those recommendations include blood work, neurocognitive testing, a magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA), a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain, electrocardiogram (EKG) and cardiac testing.Carano, 43, retired from MMA 17 years ago while Rousey hung up her gloves 10 years ago, but did compete in the WWE from 2018 onwards.Rousey told BBC Sport in 2024 how she suffered from concussions before she transitioned into MMA from judo."I had been hiding concussions and neurological injuries for so long that it just became part of it," she said."And that was the point I was forced to really self-assess and be like, 'your brain has taken too much damage for too many years'."Foster says he currently has no concerns about the contest as long as they "pass their medicals and pass all their neurological batteries"."There's nothing wrong with this fight," he added.Rousey v Carano will headline the first MMA event on Netflix. Rousey is a former UFC champion – becoming the first female to sign with the promotion – while Carano is considered one of the pioneers of the sport in the women's code.Carano retired before Rousey made her MMA debut, but the rivals have long been linked with a match-up and the UFC tried to make the fight at the height of Rousey's career. After a five-year unbeaten streak, Rousey lost her UFC bantamweight title to Holly Holm in a shock defeat, and when she was knocked out by Amanda Nunes in her comeback the following year, she retired from MMA.Rousey has a 12-2 record while Carano is 7-1, with her only loss against Cris Cyborg in her last bout in 2009.-BBC

The 'snow princess' who divides opinion

The 'snow princess' who divides opinion

Wherever Eileen Gu goes, her fans will follow. Headlines will too. With five medals - and the opportunity for one more on Saturday - she is the most decorated female Olympic freestyle skier in history. But she is also someone who transcends her sport, a 22-year-old global superstar with a bank balance to make your eyes water.China fell in love with its 'snow princess' at the Beijing 2022 Olympics where, as the poster girl of the Games, she duly delivered. She became freestyle skiing's youngest Olympic champion with her big air and halfpipe golds at the age of 18, and the first to win three medals at the same Games when she added slopestyle silver.Later that year, she was named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in the world."I just like being the best. I've always wanted to do that," said Gu at the Milan-Cortina Olympics, where she has added two more silver medals to her Olympic collection."I wanted to be the best at math when I was in kindergarten, and then I wanted to get into the best high school, and I wanted to have the highest SAT score, and then I wanted to get to the best college, and I wanted to be the best skier I could be."Then I wanted to do every event, and then I wanted to win them all. When you get a taste of it, it's kind of addictive."On and off skis, Gu is a high achiever in every part of her world.California-born and raised by an American father and Chinese mother, she attended private school in San Francisco and is currently taking a sabbatical from her studies at Stanford University, where she majors in international relations and previously studied quantum physics. She is also fluent in Mandarin, and as a child would spend summers in Beijing."Sometimes it feels like I'm carrying the weight of two countries on my shoulders," Gu said earlier in the 2026 Games. In 2019, at the age of just 15, she switched her sporting allegiance from the US to China, wanting to "inspire millions of young people in Beijing - my mother's birthplace" before the 2022 Olympics.Whatever her reasoning, it was a decision that proved lucrative. In December, Forbes ranked Gu as the fourth-highest paid female athlete for 2025, behind only tennis players Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek. But unlike those three, only a tiny amount of her $23.1m (£17.1m) income last year came from prize money from her sport - around $100,000 (£74,000).Instead, it comes through endorsements with brands such as Red Bull, Porsche and Tiffany & Co, while she has walked the runway for Louis Vuitton and Victoria's Secret and is signed by modelling agency IMG.It also emerged in 2025, as reported in the Wall Street Journal, external, that Gu and another athlete were set to be paid a combined $6.6m (£4.9m) by the Beijing Municipal Sports Bureau. In total, the two athletes were said to be paid nearly $14m (£10.4m) over the past three years by the Bureau. But her decision to compete for China was also one that drew much criticism, not just because of China and the US' rivalry as the world's two biggest economies, but because of China's authoritarian Communist Party rulers and its poor record on human rights - which it denies. While the initial furore died down, it has raised its head again at these Games. At the start of the Olympics, American freestyle skier Hunter Hess spoke out about the actions of the United States' Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) organisation and ongoing tensions in the US.In January, intensive care nurse Alex Pretti, 37, and fellow Minnesota resident Renee Good, 37, were both killed by ICE agents in the city, sparking widespread protests.Asked what it means to represent the USA, Hess said: "It's a little hard."Just because I'm wearing the flag doesn't mean I represent everything that's going on in the US."President Donald Trump responded to Hess' comment by calling him a "real loser", and Gu was one of several athletes who publicly defended Hess and others speaking out."As someone who's been caught in the crossfire before, I feel sorry for the athletes," she said. But that enraged her critics, given Gu chose to speak out against Trump but has never criticised China.Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom called her a "traitor", adding she "was born in America, raised in America, lives in America and chose to compete against her own country for the worst human rights abuser on the planet - China"."You don't get to enjoy the freedoms of US citizenship while acting as a global PR asset for the Chinese Communist Party," he wrote on X.When asked about China's human rights record by Time magazine, external, in an interview published in January, she answered: "I'm not an expert on this."I haven't done the research. I don't think it's my business."Gu has 2.6m followers on Instagram, has amassed 11.7m likes on TikTok, and at the Livigno Snow Park high up in the Italian Alps, no athlete has more fans in attendance.Clad in the red colours of China, they line the front of the fan areas, flags adorned with images of Gu's face pegged to the fences, and celebrate her every run like it has clinched Olympic gold. After every run, the ever-driven and disciplined Gu seeks out her mother, Yan, to review video footage on her phone. Yan, reportedly a successful venture capitalist who brought her daughter up single-handledly, is accredited at the Games and is the first person Gu celebrates her successes with.During Monday's big air final, Yan was seen watching alongside former International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach. After competitions, Gu is the one every media outlet wants to speak to, and she gracefully and politely obliges as she slowly shuffles through the mixed zone. But it was from a press conference earlier this week that her remarks to a journalist went viral, when she was asked if she felt her two silver medals were actually two golds lost."I'm the most decorated female freeskier in history. I think that's an answer in and of itself," she replied."How do I say this? Winning a medal at the Olympics is a life-changing experience for every athlete. Doing it five times is exponentially harder because every medal is equally hard for me but everybody else's expectations rise, right?"So the two medals lost situation, to be quite frank with you, I think is kind of a ridiculous perspective to take."I'm showcasing my best skiing, I'm doing things that quite literally have never been done before so I think that is more than good enough. But thank you."In the lead-up to the Games, Gu did interviews with the likes of Vogue and Time magazine, but it was reports in the Swiss media, external that had the potential to further fuel a competitive rivalry at the top of the sport. It was reported that the coach of Swiss skier Mathilde Gremaud left her team to join Gu's on the eve of the Games, just as he had four years earlier before Beijing 2022.At those Games, Gremaud pipped Gu to slopestyle gold, while Gu won the big air title with Gremaud taking bronze. This time around, Gremaud again won slopestyle gold, with Gu taking silver, while the Swiss star withdrew from the big air after a crash, with Gu going on to finish second again. Before that big air final and as a result of reaching it, Gu had taken to Instagram to highlight a scheduling issue. It meant, as the only woman competing in three freeski events, she would miss a full day of halfpipe training. After appealing to the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) for another opportunity to train, she said she had been turned down."This decision is disappointing to me because it seems to contradict the spirit of the Games," she said."Daring to be the only woman to compete in three events should not be penalised. Making finals in one event should not disadvantage me in another."BBC Sport understands Gu had already been handpicked as one of 10 athletes - five men, five women - invited to a halfpipe testing training session, while having three official training sessions is more than the usual two held before World Cups.In a statement, FIS told BBC Sport: "For athletes who choose to compete in multiple disciplines and/or multiple events, conflicts can sometimes be inevitable."So serious is Gu taking these Olympics that she has brought 21 pairs of skis with her to Livigno, seven per event. Asked by BBC Sport how many she would normally take to a competition, she replied two or three. In the halfpipe training she did do she looked in imperious form, and qualified for Saturday's final in fifth place, with Great Britain's Zoe Atkin, also a Stanford student, topping the standings."My sixth Olympic final. I am proud to have a 100% success rate," Gu told BBC Sport."It is not an easy thing to do. The Olympics brings out the best and worst in people."Being able to withstand that pressure is something I am really proud of."-BBC

Norris hates the new cars?

Norris hates the new cars?

Lando Norris has admitted he described the new Formula 1 cars as "a lot of fun" last week to "see what the reaction was of everyone".The world champion also suggested Max Verstappen, who had said the cars were "just not F1", could "go and find something else to do" if he did not like them.On Thursday, at the second pre-season test, Norris said: "I just didn't want to come out into the media and complain to everyone on the first weekend back."I just wanted to say that and see what the reaction was of everyone."It's been quite an amusing week, and it certainly made a lot of people comment and say a lot of things."The McLaren driver also admitted the cars were "certainly not the purest form of racing", and he shared Verstappen's views in many ways."I agree with Max on a lot of comments," Norris said. "Probably most of the comments I agree with, but it's not that I don't have fun out there. So there's two sides."I do agree with basically every other driver, because I think every other driver has made their comments pretty clear. I just didn't want to come out into the media and complain to everyone on the first weekend back. I want to still enjoy my time and just say what I feel."I had fun last week. I've still been having fun out there now. And I think we know as a championship with FIA and with Formula 1, we're trying to improve the car that we have now, because it's certainly not the purest form of racing, and that's what Formula 1 should be."A lot of the driving is focused on just trying to get the battery to work properly and less focused on how can you as a driver get everything out of the car."Verstappen's criticisms centred on the amount of energy management that is required with the new cars. The combination of the power provided by the electrical part of the engine being increased three-fold, to about half of the total output, and the batteries being more or less the same size, has led to drivers doing tasks they have described as counter-intuitive.These include not coming out of the corner before a qualifying lap as fast as possible, lifting and coasting on the straights on qualifying laps, and backing off before the end of a qualifying lap, all strategies aimed at the optimum use of energy and best overall lap time. This has led to continuing discussions behind the scenes about tweaks to the rules before or after the start of the season, when the regulations governing engines are already complicated as a consequence of the way the engines perform.A number of drivers have also expressed concern about the potential difficulty of overtaking as the former DRS overtaking aid has been replaced by a "boost" button giving a burst of extra electrical energy, which is proving less effective so far.Williams driver Carlos Sainz, a director of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association, said: "My message to [commercial rights holder] FOM and FIA is [at] the start of the year we need to stay a bit open-minded in case the regulations that we've come up with are maybe a bit exaggerated on the amount of harvesting or deployment that we have to do through a lap."It might make some circuits OK, like potentially here, even though I still think here is not fully OK with what we're seeing so far."But tracks like Melbourne or potentially Jeddah, tracks that might be more energy-demanding, we might need to adjust a bit the regulations."It is not easy because it's such a big change that I don't think anyone knew how to predict how much downforce/drag the car was going to have and what level of deployment the teams would come up with. We should stay flexible rather than committed to a certain level of energy management."-BBC

Reimagining the sound of sport for deaf fans

Reimagining the sound of sport for deaf fans

New technologies tested at the Deaflympics in Tokyo are creating new ways of experience the atmosphere at sporting events. For fans of live sport, the experience is as much about the atmosphere – the sights, smells and sounds – as the drama unfolding in front of them.Think about the crack of a bat, the blast of a whistle, thump of a ball and the roar of the crowd. Would there be something missing without them? At the Deaflympics in Tokyo in November 2025, sound has been reimagined to ensure no-one misses out.Filming recently for BBC TechXplore, I learned that, at the Deaflympics, sound doesn't have to just be something you hear. It can be something you see. Something you feel. Sometimes, something you hold. For more than a century, the Deaflympics has been the pinnacle of elite competition for deaf athletes. Now, it is also one of the world's most important testing grounds for inclusive technology, where engineers, designers and deaf users collaborate to redefine how sport is experienced. From on-screen onomatopoeia to AI-powered announcements and vibrations delivered into the audience, Tokyo's Deaflympics offers a glimpse of a future where sound no longer belongs only to those who can hear.Seeing sound at the table tennis tableSometimes, the simplest technologies are the most powerful. Inside the table tennis arena, I felt the electricity in the atmosphere as fans rallied behind Japan, a global powerhouse in the sport. But instead of focusing on the ball's rhythmic rally, deaf spectators are invited to look up.Above the court, giant animated graphics flash across a screen: bold Japanese onomatopoeic words that mirror the rhythm of play. Each strike is matched with expressive characters that visually represent sound effects – the impact of the ball, the speed of the rally, the power of a smash. Sound, translated into language you can see.Onomatopoeia – words that imitate sounds – plays a unique role in Japanese culture, where visual sound expressions are widely used in manga and media. At the Deaflympics, that cultural familiarity becomes an accessibility tool. For some fans, especially newcomers to the sport, the system provides instant context: how fast the rally is, when a point is decisive, when momentum shifts.Ito Maki of Japan's Deaf Table Tennis Association, has seen technology evolve over the years. "I used to be a table tennis player, so I prefer to watch the matches themselves," he says. "But for people who don't play, or who are deaf, this helps them understand better. Being able to hold an event like this now – it moves me deeply."Onomatopoeia beyond sportWith 19 Deaflympics venues both in and around Tokyo, thousands of deaf visitors from around the world have helped to turn the city into a living laboratory for accessible urban technology.Station-hopping between venues, I tested Toppan's transparent sound-to-text translation screens. Deployed in 19 Toei Metro stations, these make travel communication easy for deaf and hearing visitors, whether they speak Japanese or not.At Deaflympics Square, a central hub for athletes and fans, I was struck by an AI-powered transport display developed by technology giant Fujitsu. Already piloted in major stations by Japan Rail, it listens for platform announcements, approaching trains, warning buzzers, and background music. The cacophony of environmental noise is categorised and converted into text and sign language.Once again, onomatopoeia plays a role. Certain sounds are represented visually to convey urgency, movement or emotion – helping users understand not just what is happening, but how it feels.Importantly, this device was created with the deaf community, specifically children from Kawasaki Municipal School for the Deaf."In Japan, many students use trains every day," says Tatsuya Honda from Fujitsu's Converging Technologies Laboratory. "We designed this device with deaf students – to be fun, safe and useful."I experienced the device alongside Finnish Deaflympian Sara-Elise Ruokonen, who said it was important deaf people were involved in the design "because we know best what we need".Feeling action through vibrationBack in the sporting arenas, sound was also brought to life through touch. At Tokyo Budokan, home of the deaf judo, spectators wore vibration devices developed by Hapbeat, a company originally known for immersive music technology. As judo fighters grip, shuffle and throw, every movement is captured by microphones and sensors in the mat. Footwork produces light vibrations. Collisions produce stronger ones. A full throw lands as a deep, unmistakable sensation to the chest.Fans do not simply watch a match – they feel it."Shuffling feet felt like a lighter vibration, while collisions were stronger," says deaf judo fan Eri Terada, from Japan. "When someone was thrown, it was a heavy thud. Each one was different. I thought, 'Wow – this is amazing. It's so easy to understand.'"The Hapbeat device also delivers match cues, like the start and end of bouts, often signaled only by voice or gesture. A former swimmer, Sano Akira, explained how transformative this is: "The simplest thing is knowing when a match starts or ends. Since I can't hear that, having this device notify me is really helpful. It gives a sense of realism – like being right there."Some aspects of sound remain hard to automate. "Detecting nuance is difficult," says Hapbeat chief executive Yusuke Yamazaki. Crowd reactions – clapping, cheering, buzzers – are adjusted in real time by a human operator. Cultural understanding matters too, as deaf audiences often wave their hands instead of clapping.Interestingly, the device also drew hearing fans as well. What began as an accessibility tool became a shared sensory experience. "Even though I can hear, the device really conveyed the atmosphere," said Nana Watanabe, a hearing spectator from Japan. "It felt like we could share the intensity together."Holding the musicThe Deaflympics doesn't just promote inclusive design in sports; it promotes accessible experiences everywhere. My personal highlight came at a music event with Indian golfer Diksha Dagar, a Deaflympics gold medalist, Olympian and two-time Ladies European Tour champion. After watching her make her final putts, we tried out Sound Hug devices from Tokyo startup Pixie Dust Technologies.Holding a football-sized orb each, sound transformed into something to embrace. The orbs pulsed light and vibrated in response to music – not only translating tone and beat but emotion. Experiencing traditional performances from hundreds of years ago, brought to life with modern immersive technologies, was incredibly moving."We can feel the music and the vibrations," said Dagar. "It tells us about the sound, so it's interpreted for deaf people."Designing a different future for soundThe Deaflympics demonstrates the power of shared, universal experiences. And, with so many deaf users present, it serves as a unique testbed for refining accessible technology.A pair of smart glasses I tried in the stands with Team USA swimmer Brooke Thompson weren't perfect yet, but the Deaflympics is the ideal proving ground for early-stage testing. When accessibility is the starting point, not an afterthought, sound is transformed. When deaf people lead design, sound becomes visible. When engineers listen differently, sound becomes tactile. When inclusion drives innovation, everyone benefits. At the Deaflympics, the future of sport is not silent – it is vividly, powerfully alive.-BBC

F1 boss reaffirms Verstappen

F1 boss reaffirms Verstappen

Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali has assured fans that the sport's new engine era will still provide plenty of thrills and Max Verstappen is in no danger of walking away.Four times world champion Verstappen has been outspoken about the new cars not being fun to drive and producing a situation that is "like Formula E on steroids" and "anti-racing".The Red Bull driver has said before that he will stop racing if he no longer enjoys it but Domenicali said there was no risk of that."I have a very good relationship with Max," the Italian told reporters on a video call when asked what made him so confident."I know him very well. I spend a lot of time with him. That's the reason. Full stop. He loves Formula One. There's no doubt about it."MET VERSTAPPEN DURING TESTINGDomenicali said he met Verstappen during testing in Bahrain on Wednesday and it had been a very constructive talk."I guarantee you that Max wants and cares about Formula One more than anyone else," he said. "He has a way of putting the point that he wants to say in a certain way."We'll have a very constructive meeting also with the federation (FIA) to highlight what are his points of view of what he believes needs to be done to keep the driving style at the centre without changing the approach."Much of the pre-season has been dominated by debate about the new cars, how they might perform and what the racing will be like with the balance between electric and combustion engine now 50-50.That will mean drivers have to be tactical with energy deployment and regeneration, with the old drag reduction system replaced by a new overtake mode giving extra power for overtaking.A NEW WAY OF DRIVINGDescribing it as a "new way of driving, a new way of interpreting the sport", Domenicali said the fastest would still win."The cars are really beautiful, the sound is very nice," he said during testing in Bahrain. "And if you go around the track here, it seems that there is the car like it was last year."In terms of speed, I'm pretty sure that the development that I can already see happening will make this car very, very fast at the end of the season already."I am totally positive to say that there will be another incredible year."Domenicali confirmed that Turkey's Istanbul Park circuit was close to a return to the calendar, likely as early as next year in rotation with a race on the existing calendar, but that the number of rounds would still be capped at 24.The 2026 season will feature one new race in Madrid in September.-Reuters

Bitcoin prices decline sharply

Bitcoin prices decline sharply

Bitcoin declined on Wednesday, extending its recent losses, amid caution ahead of key US economic data and expected comments from the Federal Reserve, which kept investors largely away from high-risk assets such as cryptocurrencies. The world’s largest cryptocurrency received little support from a disclosure by Strategy Inc. — the largest institutional holder — of additional purchases, while dip buyers remained cautious after Bitcoin fell about 50% from its record high reached in October.Bitcoin fell about 1% to $67,746.6 as of 01:19 ET (06:19 GMT).Strategy buys $168 million worth of Bitcoin Strategy said on Tuesday that it purchased 2,486 Bitcoin for $168.4 million over the past week, bringing its total holdings to 717,131 coins. The purchase was made at an average price of $67,710 per coin, slightly below current price levels. The deal marks the company’s third Bitcoin purchase in February, with the latest acquisition funded through additional share issuances. The company had said earlier this week that it can withstand a Bitcoin price drop to $8,000 and still meet its debt obligations. However, those statements — made after a prolonged decline in Bitcoin prices — drew criticism over potential shareholder dilution, especially if the company continues issuing new shares to fund further coin purchases.Strategy has become a key concern for Bitcoin investors, amid fears that continued price declines could force it to sell part of its large holdings to cover financial obligations.Altcoins trade in a narrow rangeBroader cryptocurrency prices moved in a narrow range on Wednesday, while most altcoins continued to post sharp losses in recent sessions, with sentiment toward the sector remaining weak.Market caution also increased ahead of a batch of key US economic indicators, most notably the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s January meeting due later today.Industrial production data are due Wednesday, trade data on Thursday, and the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index — the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge — on Friday. These releases, along with the meeting minutes, will be closely examined for further clues on the interest rate path.Cryptocurrency markets are sensitive to US rate expectations due to their speculative nature and reliance on a loose monetary environment.US President Donald Trump’s nomination of Kevin Warsh to lead the Federal Reserve triggered sharp sector losses earlier in February, as he is viewed as less inclined toward monetary easing. In trading, Ethereum — the second-largest cryptocurrency — rose 1.1% to $2,003.20, while XRP gained 0.2% to $1.4814.-economies.com

Gold heads for weekly loss

Gold heads for weekly loss

Gold steadied on Friday, but was set for a weekly decline as the dollar climbed to a near one-month high, while investors awaited key U.S. inflation data to assess the Federal Reserve's monetary policy moving forward.Spot gold was steady at $5,000.40 per ounce, as of 0530 GMT, and was down about 1% for the week so far. U.S. gold futures for April delivery were up 0.4% at $5,019.10."Precious metals are consolidating with a slight downward bias at this time... We've seen the dollar picking up from its lows and that led to a bit of a pressure in precious metals," said GoldSilver Central Managing Director Brian Lan."Even during this period when there is no China market to support gold, we've seen that prices have more or less been steady, which also tells you that there is still a lot of buying in lower levels for gold."Markets in Mainland China and Taiwan were closed for the Lunar New Year holidays. The dollar was set for its strongest weekly performance since October, supported by a run of stronger-than-expected economic data, a more hawkish Federal Reserve outlook and lingering tensions between the U.S. and Iran. The Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) data, the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, for December is now in focus for clues on U.S. monetary policy.Markets currently expect the Fed to deliver its first rate of the year in June, according to CME's FedWatch Tool. FEDWATCHNon-yielding bullion tends to do well in low-interest-rate environments.Goldman Sachs said in a note that under the base case scenario, it expects central bank buying to re‑accelerate, while private investors will add exposure only in response to Fed rate cuts, driving gold higher to $5,400/troy ounce by end‑2026.It also said it continues to see the medium-term trajectory for gold prices as upward, potentially with elevated volatility.Elsewhere, spot silver edged 0.2% higher to $78.47 per ounce. Spot platinum ticked up 0.1% to $2,071.63 per ounce, while palladium gained 0.1% to $1,684.59.-Reuters

Oil heads for first weekly gain

Oil heads for first weekly gain

Oil prices rose on Friday, headed for their first weekly gain in three, on growing concerns a conflict may erupt between the U.S. and Iran, after Washington said Tehran will suffer if it does not agree a deal on its nuclear activity in a matter of days.Brent crude futures rose 25 cents, or 0.4%, to $71.91, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude gained 31 cents, or 0.5%, to $66.74 as of 0437 GMT.Prices settled at a six-month high on Thursday after U.S. President Trump said "really bad things" would happen if Iran does not come to an agreement regarding a nuclear programme it has said is peaceful but that the U.S. believes is militaristic. Trump set a deadline of 10 to 15 days.Iran, meanwhile, has planned a joint naval exercise with Russia, a local news agency reported, days after temporarily closing the Strait of Hormuz for military drills."Crude oil prices have edged to six-month highs as concerns over potential supply risks from the Strait of Hormuz keep markets on edge," said Phillip Nova senior market analyst Priyanka Sachdeva.Iran lies opposite the oil-rich Arabian Peninsula across the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of global oil supply passes. Conflict in the area could limit oil supplies entering the global market and push up prices."Market focus has clearly shifted to escalating Middle East tensions after the failure of multiple rounds of U.S.-Iran nuclear talks, even as investors debate whether any actual disruption will materialise," Sachdeva added. Also supporting oil prices were reports of falling crude oil stocks and limited exports in the world's biggest oil producing and exporting countries.U.S. crude inventories dropped by 9 million barrels, as refining utilisation and exports climbed, an Energy Information Administration report showed on Thursday.Worries about how interest rates in the U.S.- the world's largest oil consumer - could pan out limited oil price gains."Recent Fed minutes pointing to steady rates or even the risk of further hikes if inflation stays sticky could cap demand," said Phillip Nova's Sachdeva.Low interest rates are typically seen as supportive for crude prices.Markets were also mulling the impact of ample supply on prices, with talks of OPEC+ leaning towards a resumption in oil output increases from April. The oil surplus that was evident in the second half of 2025 continued in January and "is likely to persist", JP Morgan analysts Natasha Kaneva and Lyuba Savinova said in a client note."Our balances continue to project sizable surpluses later this year," they said, adding that meant output cuts of 2 million barrels per day would be needed to prevent excess inventory builds in 2027.-Reuters

US goods trade deficit hits record high

US goods trade deficit hits record high

Despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s global tariff policy, last year’s U.S. trade deficit remained high. Notably, the goods trade deficit, which includes automobiles and semiconductors, reached a record high. While the full economic impact of the tariffs has not yet been realized, critics argue the situation is not unfolding as the U.S. initially intended.According to data released on the 19th (local time) by the U.S. Department of Commerce, the annual trade deficit for goods and services combined last year was $901.5 billion (approximately 1,300 trillion Korean won). This marked a slight decrease from the $903.5 billion deficit recorded in 2024 under the Biden administration. In December alone, the trade deficit surged by 32.6% ($17.3 billion) to $70.3 billion compared to the previous month. The issue lies in the goods trade deficit. Last year’s goods trade deficit hit a record $1.241 trillion, a 2.1% increase from 2024. The Wall Street Journal noted, “The global tariffs implemented by the Trump administration in April last year aimed to address trade imbalances, yet the goods trade deficit has actually increased.”Some analysts suggest that the trade policy has not reduced U.S. import dependence but merely shifted trade flows to other countries. Trump claimed tariffs would boost domestic factory production and reduce reliance on foreign goods. However, many importers adjusted shipment timelines or switched purchasing countries to counter the tariffs. For instance, imports from China plummeted by nearly 30%, hitting the lowest level since 2009. Meanwhile, imports from Vietnam, Southeast Asia, India, and Taiwan increased, offsetting much of the deficit reduction. The New York Times stated, “Companies have turned to factories in other regions instead of China.” Reuters added, “Punitive tariffs failed to revive U.S. manufacturing, with manufacturers cutting approximately 83,000 jobs over the past year.”The long-term outlook remains uncertain, including whether the tariff policy will lead to reduced imports, increased exports, and a narrower trade deficit. Attention is also focused on the U.S. Supreme Court’s review of the constitutionality of the Trump administration’s tariffs. The U.S. government has indicated it will impose new tariffs using alternative authorities if the current ones are invalidated, suggesting potential volatility in the near term.-The Chosunilbo

Dollar set for best week

Dollar set for best week

The dollar was poised on Friday to cap its strongest weekly performance since October, buoyed by a run of better-than-expected economic data, a more hawkish Federal Reserve outlook and as tensions between the U.S. and Iran kept markets on edge.Overnight, the greenback got an added lift after data showed the number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits fell more than expected last week, underscoring labour market stability. It clung to gains in early Asia trade on Friday and left sterling languishing near a one-month low at $1.3457. It was headed for a weekly drop of nearly 1.5%.The euro was similarly down a touch 0.02% at $1.1768 and set to lose 0.8% for the week, with the common currency also weighed down by uncertainty over European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde's tenure.Against a basket of currencies, the dollar hovered near Thursday's one-month peak and was last at 97.89. It was on track for a weekly gain of more than 1%, which would mark its strongest performance in more than four months."It wouldn't surprise me if the U.S. dollar keeps lifting for a while longer," said Joseph Capurso, a strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, citing hawkishness from this week's Fed minutes which showed several policymakers were open to rate hikes if inflation proved sticky.Concerns about a U.S.-Iran conflict have also lent the dollar some safe-haven support this week.U.S. President Donald Trump warned Iran on Thursday it must make a deal over its nuclear program or "really bad things" will happen, and set a deadline of 10 to 15 days, drawing a threat from Tehran to retaliate against U.S. bases in the region if attacked."That could really affect oil markets and currency markets if things go bad there. It'll be a test also about whether or not the U.S. dollar is still a safe haven," said Capurso."A major attack would call that into question."RATES, RATES, RATESThe focus for markets now turns to the release of the U.S. core PCE price index and advance fourth quarter GDP figures later in the day, which could drive the next move in currencies.Investors continue to price in roughly two Fed rate cuts this year, though expectations for such a move in June have dipped to a roughly 58% chance from 62% a week ago, according to the CME FedWatch tool."The big argument within the Fed is whether or not to proactively lower rates to support the job market, or to keep rates higher for longer in order to fight inflation," said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer for Northlight Asset Management, adding that Friday's PCE report will "add to the debate".Elsewhere, the Australian dollar was down 0.08% at $0.7055 but set to lose just 0.2% for the week, as it continues to be buoyed by hawkish rate expectations at home. The New Zealand dollar was in a bit more of a bother, headed for a 1.2% weekly loss, undone by a dovish outlook on rates from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. Investors wagering on tighter policy were badly wrongfooted, following a blizzard of cuts over the past year or so.The kiwi last traded 0.12% lower at $0.5967.In Japan, the yen dipped 0.05% to 155.08 per dollar, reversing slight gains from earlier in the session after data on Friday showed the country's annual core consumer inflation hit 2.0% in January, marking the slowest pace in two years."Today's data won't exactly instil a sense of urgency in the (Bank of Japan) to resume its tightening cycle, especially given the lacklustre rebound in activity last quarter," said Abhijit Surya, senior APAC economist at Capital Economics."However, if we're right that the recent slump won't prove enduring, while wage growth picks up and underlying price pressures remain relatively firm, there is still a strong case for the bank to hike rates again in June."-Reuters

BofA commits billions to private credit deals

BofA commits billions to private credit deals

Bank of America is committing $25 billion to private credit deals, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters on Thursday, as the Wall Street giant prepares a war chest to further its advance in the lucrative slice of finance.Traditional banks such as BofA have been competing with private credit supplied by alternative asset managers. Private credit has become a key financing source for corporate America as tighter post‑crisis lending standards pushed borrowers to seek capital outside traditional banks.BofA's move underscores a broader push from Wall Street giants, including rival JPMorgan Chase to compete with private credit providers who often face lighter capital and regulatory requirements.Last year, JPMorgan said it would be allocating $50 billion from its balance sheet to provide private credit to clients. Goldman Sachs also created a new division as part of its push into the lucrative market.Private credit refers to loans provided by non-bank lenders, which are typically made to risky borrowers or companies looking to finance mega buyouts with debt. These loans can be processed quicker, and are an important source of funding for borrowers deemed too vulnerable. However, risks linger. Concerns over credit quality and exposure to AI-vulnerable software stocks have cast a renewed shadow over the burgeoning private credit market.Earlier on Thursday, shares of alternative asset managers saw heavy selloff after private capital firm Blue Owl Capital (OWL.N), opens new tab permanently halted redemptions at one of its funds and sold some assets to pay down debt.Apollo Global Management, Blackstone KKR, Ares, and Carlyle Group fell between 4% and 6% during regular trading. In 2024, Citigroup and Apollo partnered for a $25 billion private credit and direct lending program.-Reuters

BofA offers art consulting to wealthy clients

Bank of America is launching an art consulting service for its wealthy clients, as new generations of collectors command changes in art auctions and more wealthy clients are using their art as collateral for loans.Consulting firm Deloitte estimated in its latest annual report on the art market that ultra-high net worth clients held around US$2.56 trillion in art in 2024, and that figure could reach $3.5 trillion by 2030. Banks and family offices expect that around one third of those art works may be transferred to younger generations over the next decade.More clients want to use their art collections as collateral for loans, usually to fund investment in business ventures. Around 70% of wealth managers saw higher demand for art-based loans last year and this kind of credit yields $2.3 billion in revenue, according to Deloitte.Art consultants will work with wealthy clients at Bank of America and Merrill Lynch, according to Drew Watson, Bank of America's head of art services. Changing tastes and emergence of new collectors, either heirs or new investors, increase the need for the service, said Watson in an interview.BofA has one of the largest art-based credit portfolios, and the new art consultancy service will help clients chose art according to their taste, but also eyeing the potential for increasing value, he said."It's a very interesting moment to look for new long-term trends in the art market with all the recent change."Art is not seen as an asset class within the client's investment portfolio, but as property that can be used as collateral to loans. BofA has one of the largest art-based loans portfolios and clients use the service to avoid the need to sell art to fund liquidity needs, the executive added.- Reuters

He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world. Who will triumph at the BAFTAs?

Who will triumph at the BAFTAs?

"Hamnet" could edge ahead of "One Battle After Another" and "Sinners" to win the top prize at the BAFTAs, as the heartbreaker about Shakespeare, his wife Agnes and the death of their son is likely to win over British voters, experts said.Action-packed dark comedy "One Battle After Another", directed by U.S. filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, leads the field with 14 nominations ahead of Sunday's ceremony, followed by vampire thriller "Sinners", which has received the most nods for next month's Oscars. But "Hamnet", directed by previous Oscar winner Chloe Zhao and based on the novel by Maggie O'Farrell, is the bookmakers' favourite to take the best film award at the BAFTAs."I think it's going to be about 'Hamnet'," said Tim Richards, founder and chief executive of Vue cinema group."'One Battle After Another' is another extraordinary film, but 'Hamnet' ... just feels like the kind of movie that BAFTA will go for."The 79th British Academy Film Awards will be held in London on Sunday evening, hosted by Scottish actor, TV presenter and director Alan Cumming.CHLOE ZHAO VERSUS PAUL THOMAS ANDERSONIan Sandwell, movies editor at Digital Spy, said BAFTA loved to recognise its own."So I wouldn't be surprised to see ('Hamnet') walk away with best film and maybe even Chloe Zhao challenging Paul Thomas Anderson in director as well, and then the acting awards," he said.Richards said if "Hamnet" wins best film, Anderson could receive best director, or vice versa, as BAFTA divides the top awards between "two extraordinary films".For leading actress, Jessie Buckley is a shoo-in for her performance as Shakespeare's wife, according to bookmakers.Leading actor is harder to call, with Timothee Chalamet vying with Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael B. Jordan for their respective performances in "One Battle After Another" and "Sinners".Sandwell said Chalamet had been picking up awards, including a Golden Globe, in the run-up to the BAFTAs for the table-tennis movie "Marty Supreme". "It would be his first (BAFTA), so it probably will happen," he said. But Sandwell said he would love to see Robert Aramayo walk away with the prize for his acclaimed performance as Tourette syndrome campaigner John Davidson in "I Swear"."Sometimes BAFTAs throw out a surprise in these leading actor categories to give it to a local lad, and it would be absolutely brilliant to see him win on the night," he said.In the supporting acting categories, the race is open but bookmakers currently favour Stellan Skarsgard and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas from Norwegian family drama "Sentimental Value".One notable movie - "KPop Demon Hunters" - is not nominated because it did not have a theatrical release in Britain before it was available to stream on Netflix. But the singing stars of the animated feature will perform their global hit "Golden" at the awards.- Reuters

Viola Davis makes literary debut

Viola Davis makes literary debut

Viola Davis is adding novelist to her impressive resume with the upcoming release of “Judge Stone,” a courtroom thriller she co-wrote with perennial bestseller James Patterson. The book — set to hit shelves on March 9 — marks Davis’s first full foray into adult fiction.Published by Little, Brown and Company, “Judge Stone” centers on Judge Mary Stone, a respected circuit judge in the tiny Alabama town of Union Springs who must navigate a deeply divisive, ethically fraught courtroom battle. When a doctor is charged under draconian abortion laws after performing a procedure on a 13-year-old girl, Stone must balance her devotion to justice, her community and her own reelection prospects. For Davis, this literary debut is a bold new chapter. In 2022, she released her memoir “Finding Me,” a deeply personal account of her rise from a tumultuous childhood to become one of the most celebrated actors of her generation; the audiobook narration earned her a Grammy Award in 2023. Following its release, Davis talked extensively about the thereaputic process of writing the memoir. “There’s an unspoken message that the only stories worth telling are the stories that end up in history books. This is not true,” she told Brené Brown during a press tour for the book. “Every story matters. My father’s story matters. We are all worthy of telling our stories and having them heard. We all need to be seen and honored in the same way that we all need to breathe.”The Oscar-winning actor isn’t letting her new literary endeavors get in the way of her onscreen prowess. Last April, she led the Amazon Prime Video thriller “G20” as the President of the United States. Looking ahead, she’s attached to the star-studded adaptation of “Children of Blood and Bone,” set for a January 2027 release.-Reuters

A tutoring company has launched what it says is Japan’s first online cram school, where every teacher is an active VTuber.According to ITmedia News, the Tokyo-based company Luminaris launched its new service, Wish High, on February 17.The online platform features currently active VTubers as teachers, who will be on hand to help tutor students on mathematics, English, physics, chemistry, classical Japanese, world history, Japanese history, and geography.Students can attend live online lessons, with classes priced at ¥9,900 per month, which works out at roughly $65 USD per course.VTuber school opens doors to new studentsWhile it’s aimed at high school students, middle school and adult students can also enroll in the virtual courses. The company says the idea is to tackle a growing issue in digital education, where students struggle to stay engaged with standard video lessons.“While online education is becoming more common, the issue of students not being able to continue with video lessons and being left behind without understanding has become apparent,” the company said.“By combining the flexibility that only online can provide with immersive lessons from VTuber instructors, we are providing an environment where students can continue to learn.”To celebrate the launch, several VTuber instructors will host YouTube livestreams starting February 19 to introduce themselves and explain their courses.VTuber teachers aren’t the only thing that has been blurring the real world and digital world together, as last year, a VTuber agency launched a “rental granny” business to help young and elderly people.- Dexerto
